Before the TECEC free community children’s play Hub opened, 3 year-old Kevin spent his days wandering the streets, looking for a friend to play with or a way to fill the long, empty hours. Without access to preschool or daycare, many children in his community, like Kevin, had no structured space to play, learn, grow and get nutritious meals. Left to roam, these children often face loneliness, lack of guidance, and exposure to unsafe situations, which can hold them back from a brighter future.
But everything changed for Kevin when he joined the TECEC play hub. Every Wednesday and Saturday, he entered a space that welcomed him warmly and encouraged him to explore new interests. For the first time, Kevin found something that sparked his imagination: molding clay. With guidance from caring facilitators, he began crafting whimsical figures, detailed models, and expressive works of art. This new passion gave him confidence, pride, and a sense of purpose.
Through the play hub, Kevin also learned the value of friendship, focus, and creativity. He made new friends and shared in the joy of discovering and creating together. Today, Kevin dreams of becoming an artist, with hopes of sharing his creations with the world.
Kevin’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of the play hub, but he’s not the only one who has benefited. Dozens of other children who would otherwise be left to roam the streets now have a safe, nurturing space to express themselves, build skills, and dream big. The play hub has given Kevin and so many others the foundation for a brighter future from the early years.
